The 3/50 Project
June 11, 2009 at 11:35 AM (Uncategorized)
As I was reading a magazine geared toward retailers, I came across a wonderful movement called The 3/50 Project. For those of us who own local businesses, and those who love and support local businesses, this project presents a completely manageable approach to doing our part to help local economies.
It all began with the thought, “which 3 local businesses would I hate to see disappear?” If you are the kind of person, as I am, who is sorry to see that a local store has closed but can’t remember the last time you shopped there, the 3/50 Project is truly an eye-opener. If we love our local businesses, and are interested in seeing our local economy flourish, we can’t forget to do our part– which means patronizing some of those businesses on a regular basis. Spending as little as $20 a month at two or three of them, or $50 between three, will make a bigger impact than we can imagine! According to The 3/50 Project’s website, “if half the employed population of the U.S. spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.” In addition, for each $100 spent locally $63 returns to the area’s economy, while only $43 stays from a purchase at a national chain, and nothing from an internet purchase.
There’s a lot at stake in our local economies. In Michigan in particular, where the unemployment rates remain painfully high and many communities are suffering from the collapse of industries that have supported them for generations, it is particularly important that we become committed to our local businesses. Here at David & Bathsheba, and at many other stores in the area, free Local First Business Directories are available to help us do our part. These directories are a fabulous resource, listing hundreds of local business in every area imaginable– everything from arts & entertainment to grocery, real estate, non-profits, and building & design. The directory even includes a list of “Top 10 Reasons to Shop Local First” and graphs giving a break-down of how your locally-spent money impacts the economy. You can visit localfirst.com for more information, or stop in and ask for a Business Directory.

Back to life! with new products
June 11, 2009 at 11:03 AM (Uncategorized)
Finally, our shop is back in full swing, and the water disaster of late April is but a distant memory. We have reopened the (formerly) damaged half of the store, and it looks better than ever! Kudos to contractor Brian Krese, and the other fabulous gents who painstakingly restored David & Bathsheba’s lost glory, often under trying conditions. If that’s not enough reason to come and visit, we have several wonderful new products in the store now, and more on the way!
Janet Basket
First on the list of goodies is the new Janet Basket, fresh from our northern neighbors. Made in Canada, these cute totes are washable and foldable. Make your market, grocery, and beach trips a little more stylish! We have five patterns in stock, including pretty pink, blue stripe, red stripe, green peony, and orange mosaic. The Janet Basket is $29.50.

Old Post Road Oils
We also received a wonderful new line called Old Post Road Oils. Based in Holland, Michigan, this handmade line features four wonderful products: No. 4 Shave Soap for men, Pear Tree Specialty Soap for women (the best shave your legs have ever experienced, guaranteed) HAE 19 Facial Soap, and Soft Oil Soap antibacterial body wash (perfect daily use, gentle enough for sensitive areas, ideal for your honeymoon!) These soaps are all-natural, made with a fabulous blend of oils and glycerin for optimum gentleness and moisture. In the words of Old Post Road Oils, these “all natural, environmentally friendly products including No. 4 Shaving Soap and Pear Tree Specialty Soap… provide superior lubrication over shaving creams, foam, and gel products.” The No. 4 Shave Soap has been lauded both on shaving blogs, and by Gail’s husband! Soaps are $8.95 for an 8-ounce bottle.

Deep Steep Foaming Hand Wash
Last but not least, we now carry Foaming Hand Wash from Deep Steep. Foaming Hand Washes are 100% natural, and infused with certified Organic Aloe Vera and Organic Herbs. Like all Deep Steep products, the Washes are 100% free from parabens, chemical preservatives, animal products, and SLS.
Foaming Hand Washes are available in 5 wonderful fragrances; Lavender-Chamomile, Rosemary-Mint, Grapefruit-Bergamot, Tangerine-Melon, and Honeydew-Spearmint. Fomaing Hand Washes are $7.95.

There’s a lot to see in David & Bathsheba! Check us out in the upcoming weeks for new Bamboo dresses, darling printed cotton purses, recycled paper jewelry, and summery cotton scarves. We will even offer a new and decadent bath line in the very near future…
Happy Bathing!

Global Girlfriend works with women’s groups in struggling areas, and all of their products are made by and support women. You’ll feel good in this super-comfy dress, inside and out!
Mini Disaster! and a wet weekend

Well, we had a mini-disaster over the weekend. Three hours after close on Saturday night, the ceiling collapsed into the “soap half” of the store, dumping dust and wet insulation all over the place, and setting off the security alarm. (It’s good to know the alarm works so well!)
It’s a bit of a setback, since we are operating in half the space and without conveniences like internet and storage space, but things could be worse. Thanks to the amazing work of Guarantee System, who packed up and carted away anything touched by so much as a speck of dust, we’ve barely lifted a finger to clean up the mess at our own store. I’m completely blown away by how amazing these guys and gals are! Today our product has been returned to us, sparkling clean, wrapped and packed gently in carefully and accurately labeled boxes. We may have to wait another week or two before the roof & ceiling are repaired and we can move back into the other half of the store, but in the meantime, our products have been given a spring cleaning that we would never have had the energy to accomplish. The glass jars and bottles have never looked so good!

I couldn’t be happier with these people. I want to hug each and every last one of them! I want to throw them a barbecue. They have made a situation that could have been nail-biting and ulcer-inducing into a minor hitch.
Stop in and visit us. Don’t despair if we look “out of business” when you drive by. We aren’t! We are open. Stop in and support us if you get a chance.
Soap Club Punch Cards
